My early research was mainly on the molecular characterization and genetic analysis of Vibrio cholerae 01 from clinical samples, taken from the biggest cholerae outbreak in the Miri division isolated between November 1997 to April 1998. These included the studies to determine the genetic relatedness among isolates through PCR-based methods and the screening of specific genes (tcp, ace, ctx and zot) which played their roles during the outbreak.

My current and future research activites will be on the monitoring, prevalance, isolation dan molecular characteristics of important Vibrio spp. (V. cholerae 01, V. cholerae non-01, V. parahaemolyticus, V. alginolyticus, V. vulnificus) from food sources and environmetal sources in Sarawak. The latest addition to my current research is on the screening, phenotypic characterization and molecular ecology of potentially pathogenic Listeria monocytogenes. Opportunistic microbes that are present as indigenous microbiota (Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp.) on the human body will also be included in future researches especially in the indexing of antimicrobial agents resistance as a regular exercise to monitor the emergence of multi-resistance strains to determine the pattern of resistance towards popular hospital prescribed antiobiotics and antimicrobial agents (i.e. tetcracycline and chloramphenicol. Analysis would involved the use of conventional methods as well as using state-of the art technology involving molecular tools, such as plasmid DNA analysis and polymerase chain reaction based methods (RAPD, ERIC, REP, Box Element, Nested, Multiplex and specific gene monitoring). Ultimately, these efforts are hoped to cover major important naturally occurring and food borne pathogens.

Another future research interest will be the development of probiotics for the treatment of effluent from aquaculture waste water and molecular epidemiological studies of foodborne pathogenic microbes in the state of Sarawak.
