Since 1998, my research interest has focused on the study of larval biology and mass-production of juvenile of fisheries important marine invertebrates. My previous work is about the larval metamorphosis of two species of edible sea urchins. Currently, I am involved with a research group that works on razor clams or ambal (Family Solenidae, Solen spp.), the commercial bivalve species in Sarawak.
Razor clams prefer intertidal sandy beaches or sandy bars, especially the western part of Sarawak. There are three known species of genus Solen found here, which were locally known as 'Ambal Biasa', 'Ambal Riong' and 'Ambal Jernang'. Unfortunately, it has been reported that razor clam is now over-exploited and faced depletion of natural stocks. Therefore, there is an urgent need to study the potential of razor clam culture and to mass-produce this species using aquaculture techniques.
Preliminary data is being gathered in identifying potential species of razor clam, sites for aquaculture and also maintaining the natural razor clam stocks. At this stage, we focus on mapping the diversity and population dynamic of several razor clam species in Kuching Bay. Simultaneously, detail works is being carried out on their life cycles through preliminary data collection related to the spawning season. The next step is to perform the artificial fertilization and establish the larval culture method. By establishing techniques to mass-produced razor clam spats and consequently releasing them to their natural habitats, we predict that the natural resource can be maintained or increased in the future. One of the most important final aims of this project is to set up Solen spp. aquaculture to meet the market demand and to guarantee adequate supply of razor clams. An integrated approach using community-based management seems to be favourable for sustainable of razor clam resources.
