Research activities My general research interest is in parasitic insects of agriculture and insects of economic importance.Insects such as "silk worms","sago worms" and mole crickets are of particular interest to me as they are potential future sources of proteins for our local communities. Mole cricketsa and "sago worms" are pests of agriculture but they can be turned around to be of benefits to farmers.
Insects, being the most numerous lifeforms and conquering every ecological niche on the surface of this planet Earth, provide the best alternative source of proteins for the future. Insects are easy and cheap to rear, and are tasty. They are also nutritious. They also occur naturally in great abundance. Hundreds of species belonging to many orders are taken as occasional food by many communities all over the globe due to many reasons such as their aphrodisiac and medicinal properties, palatable taste, tradisional practices, and availability, etc.
My current research interest includes documenting insect species consumed as food by local communities, assessing species that can be promoted and reared in large numbers, and looking at cheap rearing methods that can easily be adopted by rural communities.
Currently, I am working on the production of "sago worm" eggs in laboratory environment which includes adults oviposition performance in captivity. I have successfully worked on silk worm eggs production, storage and hatching of eggs. I am also starting on the laboratory production of mole crickets eggs and cheap means for mass production.
My other research interests include ecological study of sago worm, documentation of Tephritid Fruit Flies of Sarawak, and the potensial use of cuticular hydrocarbons (waxes) for the identification and phylogenetic study of insects, particularly of beetles.
