INTRODUCTION

Plant Resource Science and Management programme provides comprehensive knowledge and management skills for sustainable and conservation of plant resources in the following sectors: agriculture, forestry, landscape and biotechnology. These sectors have been identified as important drivers of economic development in line with our country’s vision 2020 of becoming a high-income nation. In addition, the sectors of agriculture and plantation have been recognized as two of the 12 core areas in the National Economic Key Areas (NKEAs), thus creating vast job opportunities with many options to choose from. These opportunities will be of great advantage for students opting to this programme to establish their career in the related field of plant science and plantation management.

The core and specialized courses provide strong scientific knowledge and application technology for management of agriculture and forest plantation as well as other plant resources. For the elective courses, students will have the opportunity to select any courses of their interest to broaden their knowledge in other fields offered by other programmes within the faculty or from other faculties in UNIMAS.

The generic courses are English Language, Bahasa Melayu, ICT competency, Ethnic Relationship and Entrepreneurship Cultivation which strengthen the student’s soft skill, interpersonal development and capabilities. Students are required to undertake industrial training in any private or government agencies for job experience and self- evaluation for their future career.

At present, this programme has 15 academic and 5 support staff members. The programme manages the Plant Research Centre and equipped with 16 research and teaching laboratories.

Programme Educational Objective (PEO)

The graduates of the programme are expected to:

  1. Become a skilful, competent and knowledgeable in the field of plant resource science and management.
  2. Be able to apply and upkeep with the development of technology in the field, taking into considerations of the environmental impacts.
  3. Be able to think critically, work as a team, communicate effectively, solve problems professionally, and demonstrate good leadership qualities, ethics, and integrity.
  4. Develop their interest in exploring opportunities in entrepreneurship.
